Upload to an FTP Host

Methods of uploading a FrontPage web to an FTP host

There are several methods of uploading a FrontPage web to an FTP host. The easiest is to use FrontPage to publish the web. Other methods involve using FTP applications or Internet Explorer.

In the case of the latter two methods preparation is important.

Good preparation will ensure that all the required folders and files are uploaded, but the unnecessary files are ignored.

Preparation

  1. Use Windows Explorer to create a top level folder eg C:\myweb
  2. Open the web in FrontPage
  3. From the FrontPage menu: File >> Publish. Browse to the folder just created. Allow FrontPage to convert this folder to a web, and publish the Web.
  4. Close FrontPage
  5. Open the folder in Windows Explorer
  6. Find and delete all folders with names beginning "_vti" These folders (and the files within them) are never published between webs
  7. Also delete the _overlay folder - This is not required.
  8. The _borders folder is another candidate for deletion if it only contains shared borders files - top.htm, left.htm, right.htm, bottom.htm Shared borders are incorporated into the pages when the pages are saved, and the files are never accessed on the live web.

Upload

The remaining folders and files should now be uploaded to the host. See article 998640051 for examples of using an FTP application and Internet Explorer.
